Situation Summary:
The humanitarian situation in the Central African Republic (CAR) has significantly worsened in 2023, with 56% of the population, approximately 3.4 million individuals, requiring assistance and protection. This represents a 10% rise compared to last year. Out of these, 2 million are grappling with intricate and critical issues, endangering their physical and mental health.
New emergencies emerging in the region are the response to the refugee crisis in Sudan (with 16,674 refugees and returnees) and the refugee influx from Chad (amounting to 34,358 refugees and returnees) at the CAR-Chad border points of Paoua and Markounda. These events have been categorized under CAT II SHR, and the crisis response team is either directly addressing these issues or monitoring them closely.
The most affected sector is food security, as 3 million people out of the total 3.4 million in need are food insecure. The health sector also demands immediate intervention with 2.8 million people requiring medical aid. A concerning surge of 30% compared to the prior year has been noted in nutritional needs, with 1.5 million individuals in need of curative or preventive aid.
The WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene) sector continues to be a crucial concern. An estimated 3 million people, which represents 58% of the total population, lack access to basic WASH facilities, and a mere 30% have access to safe drinking water.
