DOD Press Release: U.S. To Deploy Additional Forces to CENTCOM
U.S. TO DEPLOY ADDITIONAL FORCES TO CENTCOM AMID IRANIAN MARITIME THREATS
July 20, 2023
The U.S. Department of Defense has announced plans to deploy additional forces to the Central Command (CENTCOM) region, with the aim of reinforcing maritime security. This decision comes in response to recent Iranian activities that have threatened to disrupt free trade in and around the Strait of Hormuz.
The order from the Secretary of Defense includes the deployment of elements from the BATAAN Amphibious Readiness Group/Marine Expeditionary Unit (ARG/MEU), which includes the USS Bataan and USS Carter Hall, as well as their associated personnel and equipment. This deployment complements the recently approved forces comprised of F-35s, F-16s, and a guided missile destroyer, the USS Thomas Hudner (DDG-116).
These actions reflect the U.S.'s commitment to ensuring freedom of navigation and countering any efforts by Iran to destabilize the region. The Department of Defense stressed its intention to continue working with allies and partners who share its commitment to the free flow of commerce. Such coordinated actions aim to oppose threats to this key principle of the rules-based international order.
The Department has not given specific details on when the new deployments will arrive in the CENTCOM area of responsibility (AOR), but the move sends a clear message to Iran and other potential adversaries about the U.S.'s commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the region.
