Adolescents may miss up to 20% of school b/c of menstruation. Latrines with facilities for menstrual hygiene management in schools can improve learning environments and promote enrollment and attendance.

On #MHDay2023, USAID joins the world in raising awareness about the key role stigma-free menstruation plays in supporting dignity and health for all people who menstruate.

In Mali, USAID promotes girls' access to information and services to adopt positive health behaviors. 538 peer educators were trained to improve students' knowledge on reproductive health and menstrual hygiene.

USAID, through International Medical Corps, supports access to health care for people in Mali with mental health disorders and helps to prevent stigma and discrimination.

Mali is one of the few countries in Africa that did not lose ground on childhood vaccination rates during the COVID-19 pandemic. Souleymane, a USAID supported community health volunteer in Kona, has contributed to that.   USAID is on the forefront of the Big Catch-Up by working to deliver vaccines and strengthen primary health care systems around the world.

SUCCESS STORY: USAID funding through International Medical Corps trained 35 health workers and 59 community volunteers on how to effectively manage mental health disorders. In addition,1,031 people attended mental health consultations in the Mopti and Tombouctou health districts.

To better direct humanitarian assistance to people in need, USAID Mali supports the International Organization for Migration to identify internally displaced persons and track population movements.

PRESS RELEASE: U.S. Congratulates the Malian People for Eliminating the Leading Infectious Cause of Blindness

VIDEO: Mali has eliminated trachoma, the leading infectious cause of blindness, as a public health problem. Future generations will no longer have their sight & opportunities to learn and work threatened by this disease. The U.S. has worked with Mali for nearly two decades, alongside other donors and partners, to support the country’s efforts to end neglected tropical diseases like trachoma. Kudos to Mali on this important public health achievement!

More than 4,800 out-of-school students will have opportunities to learn reading, writing, and math in Dogosso, Fulfulde, Tamasheq, and Songhoi, among other local languages. This funding from USAID will also help them learn about good governance, association management, the creation of small production units, and business plan development.   In Sévaré, USAID provided emergency food and nutrition support to 150 Internally Displaced Persons following recent incidents. This support covers their immediate needs for over one month.   VIDEO: “This training will allow us to become qualified poultry farmers and exploit the full potential of this undervalued sector, “ Adama Togo, farmer in Yanfolila.

SUCCESS STORY : With support from USAID GLEE, nearly 6,000 adolescents now have their birth certificates, providing them with an official identity, allowing them to enroll in the formal educational system and take examinations, protecting them from early marriage, and opening doors to obtain other civil documents.

This demonstrates Mali’s tremendous commitment to improving the health & well-being of the people of Mali.

SUCCESS STORY: With assistance from USAID Girls’ Leadership and Empowerment through Education, Fatoumata obtained an official copy of her birth certificate, was able to catch up on her studies, and eventually transitioned to the fifth grade in a formal primary school.
