An update on the efforts of the Uganda People's Defense Forces (UPDF) as they prepare for the final assault on Al-Shabaab in Somalia. Despite setbacks, including the recent Bulo Marer ambush that claimed the lives of over 54 combat soldiers, the UPDF remains committed to eradicating the threat of Al-Shabaab in the region.
Overview of UPDF Preparations:
Lt. General Sam Okiding, the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) Force Commander, recently visited UPDF troops in their various bases, including Qoryole and Janaale, which are vital Forward Operating Bases in the fight against Al-Shabaab. These bases, located in the Lower Shabelle region, fall under the responsibility of the UPDF troops.
Boosting Morale and Collaboration:
During his visit, Lt. Gen. Okiding held talks with the soldiers to motivate them and assess their readiness to face the enemy and protect the people of Somalia. He emphasized the importance of delivering on their mandate and leaving behind a safe and secure Somalia. Additionally, the Force Commander also met with local administration officials and clan elders to discuss collaboration between ATMIS forces and local leaders to defeat the threat posed by Al-Shabaab.
Somali Transition Plan and Drawdown:
As the UPDF continues its operations, the ATMIS soldiers are concurrently withdrawing from some sections in compliance with the Somali Transition Plan (STP). The first phase of the drawdown will see over 2,000 soldiers leaving, followed by an additional 3,000 in the next phase. Despite the exit, the ATMIS team is actively participating in Al-Shabaab operations, with the UPDF set to join the second phase of operations against the group.
Future Operations:
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has hinted that the upcoming operation will focus on Jubaland and Southwest states. This demonstrates the ongoing commitment of the UPDF and ATMIS forces to combatting Al-Shabaab and creating long-term stability in Somalia.
The UPDF's efforts in preparing for the final assault on Al-Shabaab, despite the setbacks they have faced, exemplify their dedication to eradicating this extremist group in Somalia. With ongoing collaboration with local leaders and adherence to the Somali Transition Plan, the UPDF and ATMIS forces are actively working towards a safer and more secure Somalia.
