Offshore oil platforms in the Gulf of Mexico are the target of armed robbery and petty thefts, while petrol piracy remains a key concern. How does this compare to the maritime crime we see in other seas? And are the Mexican cartels involved?
In this episode of The Insight video series, Intelligence Analyst Marta Garcia Ruiz takes a look at the trends and patterns of maritime criminality off the coast of Mexico, with piracy in the Gulf of Mexico and robberies targeting oil companies such as PEMEX being carried out apparently by fishermen and disgruntled former oil workers. With cartels and organised criminals involved in offshore marine criminality elsewhere in the world, for example in the form of drug trafficking, Marta explores the issue of crime in the Gulf of Mexico from a risk assessment standpoint; and how likely it is that cartels such as the Sinaloa Cartel and Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) that are so heavily involved in onshore crime would not be involved in offshore criminality.
