DAILY FLASH

Protests in Panama (ECHO FLASH 23 Jul 11:38:38 AM)
Since 7 July protests are taking place across Panama due to the increase in prices of fuel and basic commodities. Protestors request a ceiling of the fuel prices, the food basket, and prices of medicines. Discontent over corruption in the country and an escalating economic crisis added to the grievances.
Protestors set up roadblocks along the main roads, including in key cities such as Panama City, Santiago, David and others, resulting in shortages of food supplies in the main urban centres, directly affecting the country’s 4.4 million inhabitants.
In addition, the road blockages and transport disruptions have a serious impact on the situation in the Darien gap, between Panamá and Colombia. Since 11 July 2022, Panama’s has halted its policy of transporting newly arrived refugees and migrants who transited through the Darien gap to its Northern province of Chiriquí at the Costa Rican border.
As a result, 6 500 refugees and migrants are stranded in the Darien gap, in living conditions below any minimum humanitarian standards. Especially, the situation in Canaan Membrillo, an indigenous community of 350 people, now hosting an additional 3 300 migrants and refugees, is of serious concern. Not only are there power cuts, but there is also a lack of shelter, food, drinkable water and latrines. The humanitarian access to the area is limited.

More than 1,000 firefighters, with support from Slovenian Armed Forces, Police, explosive ordnance disposal Units, forestry services and volunteers are involved in the operations. Three helicopters and one plane are providing aerial support for the ground forces.
In addition, five helicopters from Austria, Croatia, Serbia (2), Slovakia, one rescEU Canadair hosted by Croatia, and two firefighting planes from Romania have been deployed to support the operations within the UCPM framework.
According to the European Forest Fire Information System (JRC-EFFIS) the fire risk on 23-24 July is expected to be extreme over western Slovenia.
