The Red Zone is an area of conflict that exists above the purely conventional threshold and below the threshold of a general nuclear exchange. Conflict takes place in this zone when one side integrates and employs conventional systems with some combination of WMD – such as theater range low-yield nuclear weapons, as well as with chemical and/or biological weapons – but does not use significant numbers of “strategic” nuclear forces (i.e. long-range delivery systems such as intercontinental ballistic missiles mated with nuclear warheads that are not low-yield weapons).
