To kick off Women’s History Month, join the Center for Strategic and International Studies on Wednesday, March 1, 2023, for a virtual Smart Women, Smart Power conversation with the Honorable Christine E. Wormuth, the 25th Secretary of the U.S. Army. Secretary Wormuth will sit down with Dr. Kathleen McInnis, Director of the Smart Women, Smart Power Initiative, for a discussion on the priorities of the United States Army as the institution prepares for this era of geopolitical uncertainty, as well as her approach to leading the largest branch of the United States military. Secretary Wormuth was confirmed by the U.S. Senate and appointed as the 25th Secretary of the U.S. Army on May 27, 2021. The Secretary of the Army is the senior civilian official within the Department of Defense (DoD) responsible for all matters relating to the U.S. Army. Prior to confirmation, Secretary Wormuth was the Director of the International Defense and Security Center at the RAND Corporation. Before joining RAND, Secretary Wormuth served in several roles during the Obama Administration, including serving from 2014-2016 in DoD as Under Secretary of Defense for Policy; from 2009 – 2010, she served as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Homeland Defense; and then served as a Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Defense at the National Security Council until August 2012. Secretary Wormuth then returned to the Pentagon as Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Strategy, Plans, and forces, and led the 2014 Quadrennial Defense Review.
