Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System — Newsletter 05/09/2022

DAILY FLASH
Japan, China, Republic of Korea - Tropical Cyclone HINNAMNOR, update (ECHO FLASH 4 Sep 12:22:00 PM)
- Tropical Cyclone HINNAMNOR continued moving northward over the East China Sea. On 4 September at 06.00 UTC, its centre was located about 330 km west of Naha island (south of Japan, Okinawa Prefecture) and approximately 730 km south of Jeju Island (Republic of Korea), with maximum sustained winds of 213 km/h (typhoon).
- According to media reports, in Japan the typhoon lashed Okinawa and nearby islands with heavy rain and fierce winds, grounding more than 100 flights connecting the islands and parts of the main southern island of Kyushu. The typhoon is also expected to bring intense rainfall to the Korean Peninsula, bringing the possibility of flooding.
- HINNAMNOR is expected to continue moving northward over the East China Sea as a typhoon and it is forecast to make landfall over the Busan City area (south-eastern Republic of Korea) on 5 September in the evening, with maximum sustained winds up to 185 km/h.
Germany - Forest Fires in Harz region in Saxony-Anhalt (ECHO FLASH 4 Sep 12:22:00 PM)
- On 3 September, a fire broke out in the National Park in Harz Mountains in Germany, in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, causing the evacuation of hundreds of tourists from the area according to the media.
- As of 4 September, the fire has affected an estimated area of 60 ha and, due to the drought and the presence of dry wood and underbrush in the area, it is spreading rapidly. 250 firefighters supported by the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW), Park Management and medical personnel are deployed on site, as well as 2 Federal Police helicopters to support the operations.
- In the early morning of 4 September, Germany requested assistance to the Union Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM), namely two firefighting airplanes.
- Two Canadairs from the rescEU offered by Italy have been mobilised and are expected to depart and arrive today to support the aerial firefighting operations.
- The EU’s Copernicus Emergency Mapping Service was activated to support the operations (EMSR630).
