Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System — Newsletter 11/08/2022

This daily newsletter provides an overview of the natural disasters that happened in the last 24 hours and response measures for ongoing disasters. Palestine - West Bank demolitions and displacement (ECHO FLASH 10 Aug 1:59:33 PM)
According to the latest UN OCHA reporting, during the first semester of 2022 a total of 388 Palestinian-owned structures have been demolished or seized, including 47 EU-funded assets worth over EUR 145,000, and 491 people have been displaced.
June 2022 marked also a record month with regard to the issuing of demolition orders, particularly against EU-funded structures, with a total of 55 structures at risk of imminent demolition, including a school in Massafer Yatta.



Gambia - Floods, update (ECHO FLASH 10 Aug 1:59:33 PM)
Heavy rainfall affected most of the country (in particular the West Coast Region, North Bank Region and the Greater Banjul Area) over late July and early August causing floods and flash floods that have resulted in casualties and widespread damage.
The International Federation of Red Cross (IFRC) reports, as of 9 August, six fatalities (five in the North Bank Region and one more in the West Coast Region). In addition, IFRC also reports more than 17,200 affected people, and a number of destroyed houses across the affected area. The worst affected is the West Coast Region, with around 13,500 affected people. The IFRC issued a Disaster relief Emergency Fund (DREF) operation to support 606 affected households and DG ECHO is considering supporting it.
The International Charter was activated (ID: 768) on 9 August in order to support the response with satellite data.
Over the next 24 hours, drier conditions are forecast over western Gambia, while moderate rainfall is forecast over the eastern part of the country.



Nigeria - Severe weather (ECHO FLASH 10 Aug 1:59:33 PM)
Severe weather continues to affect Nigeria since mid-July, triggering floods and incidents that have resulted in casualties and damage.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reports, as of 8 August, 31 fatalities, more than 5,800 affected people and over 880 damaged shelters in 16 IDP camps across Yobe State, Northeast Nigeria.
The European Union is providing EUR 70,000 on emergency preparedness to reduce the impact of floods in the country.
This EU funding supports the Nigerian Red Cross Society to increase capacity and preparedness to reduce the impact of likely floods in five states in northern and southern Nigeria.
The funding is part of the EU's overall contribution to the Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).



France - Wildfires update (ECHO FLASH 10 Aug 1:59:33 PM)
Several wildfires continue to burn across France, engaging more than 7,000 firefighters and supported by aerial fleet, as reported by the Operational Centre for Inter-ministerial Crisis Management (COGIC).
In Gironde Department (Nouvelle-Aquitaine, south-western France) at least 6,349 people have been evacuated across the municipalities of Belin-Beliet, Saint-Magne, and Hostens, after new fire outbreaks took place, covering an area of more than 5,000 ha, according to COGIC and the Prefecture of Nouvelle-Aquitaine and Gironde.
In southern France, Saint-Rome-de-Dolan forest fire continues to burn and has caused more than 3,000 evacuations in Aveyron Department (Occitanie). Other evacuations occurred in Maine-et-Loire Department (Pays de la Loire, western France) after a wildfire in BaugƩ-en-Anjou has already burned more than 650 ha.
On 9 August, France activated the EU Civil Protection Mechanism requesting aerial firefighting means. Greece offered 2 Canadairs registered in the rescEU reserve and Poland offered two Ground Forest Fire Fighting modules using Vehicles.
According to the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), the fire risk is expected to be from very high to extreme on 10-11 August over most of France, particularly southern and western areas.



Slovenia, Italy - Wildfire (ECHO FLASH 10 Aug 1:59:33 PM)
A wildfire broke out on 9 August in Soceb area (Littoral Region, south-western Slovenia) close to the border with Trieste City (north-eastern Italy).
The wildfire is spreading toward the villages of Osp in Slovenia and San Dorligo della Valle in Italy, where a number of houses have been evacuated. The difficulty of the terrain in Soceb has hindered firefighting operations, but on the morning of 10 August, the wildfire event was declared under control by the Administration of the Republic of Slovenia for Protection and Rescue (URSZR). About 150 firefighters supported by 45 vehicles participated in the operations.
On 9 August, the Slovenian Civil protection authorities activated the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, requesting support with aerial firefighting capacity for the wildfire in Soceb.
According to the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), the fire risk is expected to be from very high to extreme on 10-11 August over south-western Slovenia, including the area already affected by the wildfire.
