| |  | Unpacking the New U.S. Strategy Toward Sub-Saharan Africa | August 24, 2022 | Secretary of State Antony Blinken launched the new U.S. Strategy Toward Sub-Saharan Africa on August 8 in Pretoria as part of his visit to South Africa, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Rwanda. Mvemba Phezo Dizolele, Senior Fellow and Director of the CSIS Africa Program hosted a conversation exploring the objectives of the new strategy, its strengths and weaknesses, and the future of U.S.-Africa relations. Panelists included Cameron Hudson, Senior Associate with the CSIS Africa Program; Joseph Sany, Vice President of the Africa Center at the United States Institute of Peace; Zainab Usman, Senior Fellow and Director of the Africa Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace; and L.  | Finding a Path Through Quagmire: Humanitarian Access and Coordination in the Sahel | August 23, 2022 | As conflict in the Sahel continues to undermine regional security and cause widespread humanitarian need, the region has become an experimental arena for the implementation of the ‘Triple Nexus’ approach to address humanitarian, development, and peacebuilding needs simultaneously. The CSIS Humanitarian Agenda and the CSIS Africa Program collaborated for the launch of the report, Finding a Path Through Quagmire - Humanitarian Access and Coordination in the Sahel. The panel featured Will Brown, Senior Associate (Non-resident) of the CSIS Africa Program, Ornella Moderan, Sahel Program Head at the Institute for Security Studies in Bamako, and Bill O'Keefe, Executive Vice President for Mission, Mobilization and Advocacy at Catholic Relief Services, with an introduction by Jacob Kurtzer, Director and Senior Fellow of the CSIS Humanitarian Agenda.

|  | Kenya Elections 2022: What's Next?
| August 19, 2022 | On August 15, Mr. William Ruto, Deputy President of the Republic of Kenya, was declared the winner of the 2022 presidential election by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). The new president will face challenges in confronting regional instability, youth unemployment, inflation, and the economic consequences of both the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia’s war on Ukraine. Watch the CSIS Africa Program’s panel discussion exploring the results of the election, hosted by Mr. Mvemba Phezo Dizolele, Senior Fellow and Director of the CSIS Africa Program. Panelists include Dr. Karuti Kanyinga, Research Professor at the Institute for Development Studies at the University of Nairobi; Dr. Wandia Njoya, Associate Professor of Literature in the Department of Language and Performing Arts at Daystar University; and Dr. Collins Odote, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Law at the University of Nairobi.

 | Humanitarian Innovation in Action Panel 3: Humanitarian Innovation in Data and Information Management | July 19, 2022 | The CSIS Humanitarian Agenda hosted a full-day conference, Humanitarian Innovation in Action, to explore the complex challenges facing the global humanitarian community and the way in which innovations—in people, processes, and products—can improve humanitarian response and mitigate the impacts of future crises. This panel, moderated by Mvemba Phezo Dizolele, discussed challenges and promising solutions in the collection, management, and use of data by humanitarian organizations. Panelists explored the need for a “humanitarian data intervention,” allowing for data and technology to be made available to local populations in the interest of better humanitarian responses. Themes that were explored include accountability, transparency, and the ethical basis of power relations.
